About your Angel

Laura Johnston is your Vail Valley Business Angel.

Laura is a professionally qualified Administrator obtaining a Masters of Business Administration from Melbourne University in 1993.  Melbourne University is internationally recognized as the best business school in Australia, comparable with the top ten in the USA. Since the 1980s, Laura has successfully administered various businesses in a number of different industries.  Working with smaller businesses, all experience was very 'hands-on'.


Laura first came to the Vail Valley in the 1995/96 season working for The Lodge at Vail, returning for the 2002/03 season, and then permanently relocating in November 2008. Laura established Vail Valley Business Angel  in 2010 to address the unique needs of local businesses and services in Eagle County, and resort towns. 

Finance & Money Matters:

Over 3 decades of continuous experience with all financial and money matters for a range of businesses.  Laura has been involved in every financial step of any business, up to the point where certified accountants prepare final tax returns and annual reports. Including:

  • Responsible for budgeting and finances of non-profit regional offices.
  • Managing expense accounts of contractors.
  • Supporting equipment sales reps by selling company finance.
  • Producing weekly business performance / statistical reports for management.
  • Seeing to the day-to-day financial needs of construction and engineering businesses.  
  • Providing cost estimates, work-in-progress reports, weight estimates (for ships), and various general management accounting reports.

Unique Mix of Administrative Skills:

Laura's experience, knowledge, and background brings an unique mix of administrative skills to all the businesses of the Vail Valley.  Over the years, Laura has concurrently gained a variety of experiences:

  • bookkeeping for property owners investing in short term and long term rental properties around the USA.
  • managing HOA accounts in Eagle County.
  • uploading and formatting Eagle County and Aspen Schools curriculum  data on website.
  • experience with numerous computer programs, starting from the earliest word processing and spreadsheet programs, through custom designed databases and financial software, to the very latest.
  • contract negotiation.
  • volunteer management for non-profits; including recruitment, training, motivating and managing across the USA.
  • writing 'must read' company newsletters.
  • staff recruitment, including maintaining long-standing staff satisfaction.
  • providing administrative support to serviced office space.
  • producing marketing materials, such as flyers, websites and press releases.
  • writing and preparing training manuals and handbooks.
  • payroll.
  • government regulations compliance and annual regulatory audits.
  • organizing and conducting training meetings and orientations throughout the country, including travel details, organizing of needed facilities and amenities hire, 
  • public speaking, maintaining conference booths, and all other details involved in representing a business in public,
  • effectively managing cross cultural communication and orientations.
  • maintaining client base of well-to-do New York, Boston and Philadelphia professionals.
  • maintaining client base of private and public high schools.
  • coordinating travel for 800 exchange students annually.
  • liaising with embassies and consulates regarding visa requirements.
  • extensive world travel continuing an interest in different cultures, world history, and international affairs.

Construction & Engineering:

Extensive experience as Administrator, Executive Assistant and assistant Finance Director for consulting engineers, architects, marine engineers and naval architects. Including:

  • Managing debt and creditors, including government debt, through late 1980s recession ensuring liquidity for continued trading.
  • Implementing management control and job costing systems.
  • Keeping accounts receivable and accounts payable current.
  • Preparing capability reports for successful tender submissions.
  • Communicating effectively with a diverse range of people.
  • Timeliness and efficiency.
